Ann's workshops do get booked up very quickly but even so it's worth placing your name on the waiting list as spaces often become available due to cancellations.

Studio Workshops

Ann teaches her own methods of working with pencil and coloured pencil to produce vibrant, detailed botanical drawings. As well as introducing colour pencil techniques the courses encourage accuracy of line and observation. Ann welcomes both the beginner and the more experienced on her courses. Courses tend to get booked up quickly so to secure a place make a provisional booking.

Ann’s studio, set in a delightful walled garden, is in Rowde near the old market town of Devizes in a beautiful part of Wiltshire.  The studio is equipped with drawing boards, clip on magnifying glasses, a light box, lamps and over-hand camera and screen to view Ann's demonstrations.

Two-day Themed Workshops

 Drawing with Graphite. Improve your accuracy of observation, tonal shading and strong definition plus an opportunity to try underpainting with graphite drawing.

 Beginners. A gentle introduction to the materials and techniques that Ann uses for her coloured pencil work.

6-7th August

 

 Highlighting fruits.  How to achieve believable shiny highlights, velvety bloom and prickly hairs on seasonal fruits such as strawberries, cherries, red and blackcurrants, apricots and gooseberries

22/23rd October

Christmas card time. Autumn berries and colourfull leaves, holly seasonal fruit and nuts- focusing on strong competition to create a personal Christmas card to stand out from the crowd.

 

6/7th November

 

 Texture and fine detail. A look at various techniques for creating realistic textures and exquisite fine detail. We will be looking at various barks, textured pumpkins and dried seed heads.

 Making Light of White.  Focus on portraying white and light coloured plant material with some work on highlights and reflective surfaces.

25-27th June

 

 The Larger Picture- Bringing the summer border to life. A chance to plan and work on a larger, more complex picture using plant material from the herbaceous border.

About Ann's studio workshops

Studio equipment available

The Studio is equipped with the following: Drawing Boards, Clip on flexible magnifying glasses, Light Box, Over-hand camera and projection Screen for viewing Ann's demonstrations, Additional desk lamps if needed,

The Studio Shop carries most of the equipment and pencil colours that Ann recommends at less than shop prices.

Ann Swan Workshops

One-day Workshops

Primarily for intermediate students and those who have already been on one of Ann's introductory courses and are familiar with coloured pencils although beginners are able to be accommodated on these days. The focus, as ever, will be on improving drawing skills, mastering coloured pencil techniques and composition. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace with individual attention when needed.

To get the best results from these workshops it is important that students bring their own equipment and also bring along any specimens they are interested in drawing. A full list of recommended colours will be supplied  and Ann will provide some seasonal plant material depending on the state of the garden or the local florists.

Students are also encouraged to bring along any work they have already done and advice can be obtained on framing and presentation.

Price per session including tuition, morning coffee, buffet lunch and afternoon tea is £80

Two-day Beginners Workshops

These are aimed specifically at beginners to colour pencil work and will cover the various methods and techniques that Ann uses.

It is a good idea that students bring along any equipment which they already have.  On receipt of payment of the deposit students will be sent  lists of recommended colours and a suggested equipment list but there is no need to purchase anything special before attending the workshop. A selection of the basic colours and equipment will be for sale at reduced rates at the studio.

The cost for a two-day workshop is £170 and includes tuition, morning coffee, buffet lunches and afternoon tea.

All workshops run from 10.00am - 4.00pm.

All sessions must be booked and paid for in advance otherwise your place cannot be guaranteed.

Two-day Improvers Workshop

This enables students familiar with coloured pencil to improve their technique and drawing skills and focus on a complete composition.

The price for the two-day course is £170 including morning coffee, buffet lunches and afternoon tea.

Two-day Pencil Workshops

Improve the accuracy of your drawing and tonal evaluation and master continuous tonal shading.

Tuition, morning coffee, buffet lunch and afternoon tea £170

Three-day Workshops.

This enables students to work on a larger and more complex picture.

Tuition, morning coffee, buffet lunch and afternoon tea £250

 

Cancellation policy

Notification of cancellation is required 14 days before the workshop for a full refund. Early notification will enable the place to be filled from the waiting list . If notice is not given 14 days prior to the course and the place cannot be filled then you may forfeit the full amount paid.

If Ann needs to cancel any date the full fee will be refunded.

Courses are non-residential but a list of local bed and breakfast accommodation close to the studio will  be supplied on receipt of the completed booking form.
